man checks his breath

A moist, hydrated mouth is something many of us take for granted. However, when you suffer from xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth syndrome, even basic functions like speaking or eating can become uncomfortable. At Crabapple Dental, we believe in the importance of understanding and recognizing dental health issues, even when it seems like an insignificant battle with dry mouth.

What is Xerostomia?

Xerostomia, in simple terms, is a condition where your salivary glands don’t produce sufficient saliva to keep your mouth wet. Saliva plays an integral role in our oral health. It aids in digestion, prevents tooth decay by neutralizing acids produced by bacteria, washes away food particles, and has proteins that aid in oral tissue health. A reduction in its production can lead to various complications.

What Causes Dry Mouth?

There are many different reasons why your oral cavity can lack proper moisture, including the following:

  • Medications: Many medicines, including those for high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety, can reduce saliva production.
  • Aging: Factors that come with aging, including the use of multiple medications and potential chronic health conditions, can affect salivary gland function.
  • Cancer Treatments: Chemotherapy drugs can alter the nature of saliva and its production. Radiation treatments to the head and neck can damage salivary glands leading to decreased saliva production.
  • Nerve Damage: An injury or surgery that causes nerve damage to the head and neck area can reduce saliva production.
  • Other Health Conditions: Conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and autoimmune diseases can be associated with dry mouth.

Symptoms to Look Out For

If you notice the following xerostomia warning signs, let our Alpharetta dental team know:

  • A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth
  • Frequent thirst
  • Sores in the mouth, cracked lips, or a dry throat
  • A tingling or burning sensation
  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty tasting, chewing, and swallowing
  • A dry, rough tongue

Managing Xerostomia

At Crabapple Dental, we recommend several steps to alleviate the discomfort of xerostomia:

  • Stay Hydrated: Sip water throughout the day. Avoid drinks with caffeine as they can dry out the mouth.
  • Moisturize the Mouth: Over-the-counter saliva substitutes can help moisten the mouth.
  • Opt for Sugar-Free Products: If you’re looking to stimulate saliva, chew sugar-free gum or suck on sugar-free hard candies.
  • Maintain Oral Hygiene: Brush with a fluoride toothpaste, use alcohol-free mouthwash, and floss daily. This will help prevent tooth decay that can be exacerbated by a dry mouth.

This dental practice is a gem! The front desk staff are kind, efficient and welcoming. I was pleasantly surprised at the clinical staff’s fantastic bedside manner. Everything was explained in advance and this was very appreciated. My teeth have never felt better! Love, love, love the hygienist that worked with me. She is a rockstar. Thank you to the whole gang!

I've been going to Crabapple dental for many years and I can honestly say Dr. Roberts and her team are by far the best. It's hard to find a good dentist that takes the time to get to know you and truly cares about your health. I knew Dr. Roberts was special when she filled a few cavities for me, then called me later that night to make sure I was ok. I feel at home when I'm there and they always treat me so well. Kelly is so wonderful! She takes her time and makes going to the dentist an easy task. I never stress about going because I know she'll take care of me. She is so pleasant and efficient; truly the best experience and I leave feeling great. Both Kelly and Dr. Roberts are so gentle and that is the most important thing to me. Dr. Roberts has the most updated equipment and beautiful office to give the best experience. I travel from downtown to see them because they are the best! Don't hesitate to make an appointment; you won't be disappointed!!
